306 Squadron was originally set up back in 1953 at Volkel Air Base, operating Republic F-84 Thunderjet fighter-bombers. After converting to the RF-84 Thunderflash three years, the unit was a dedicated reconnaissance squadron for most of its career. In the 1960’s, the unit received RF-104 Starfighters and ultimately, in 1984, received F-16 Fighting Falcons outfitted with reconnaissance pods. After losing its reconnaissance role in 2002, 206 Squadron became the F-16 conversion unit being disbanded in 2010. Following the decision by the Royal Netherlands Air Force to purchase MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the surveillance and attack roles, 206 Squadron was reactivated at Leeuwarden Air Base. To commemorate the unit’s 70th anniversary in 2023, the first MQ-9 received a special livery on its stabilizers, showcasing the hawk from the unit’s emblem and also depicting silhouettes of all past aircraft operated by the squadron during its seven decades of service.
